Siege of Marawi

A five month long battle between Philippine Government Troops and ISIS linked combatants led by Abu Sayyaf Emir, Isnilon Totoni Hapilon. It began on May 23, 2017. By the time Abu Sayyaf leader Hapilon was dead, October 16, 2017, over a thousand combatants had also died and nearly as many civilians. Within a week of Hapilon’s death, the war was declared over by Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. Marawi remains as before, The Islamic City of Marawi and its current population remains at over 99% Muslim.
